Gio Ponti Lounge Set for ISA Bergamo Italy, Circa 1950s
pe-1665
Curved Italian Mid-Century Modern seating group attributed to Gio Ponti and produced by ISA Bergamo, retaining the original manufacturer’s plate. Italy, circa 1950s.
The set comprises a petite two-seat loveseat and a matched pair of lounge chairs. Each piece features sculptural barrel backs with flared wing arms, creating an elegant architectural silhouette characteristic of early postwar Italian Rationalist design. The proportions are notably refined and compact and well suited to apartment-scale interiors, a hallmark of Ponti’s residential commissions during the 1950s. Ideal for collectors of documented Ponti production and early ISA Bergamo ( original plate is attached on front of the settee ).
The seating rests on splayed, tapered metal legs. Constructed with solid hardwood frames and traditional webbed support, the set reflects quality mid-century Italian craftsmanship. The curvature of the backs and the restrained profile underscore the synthesis of comfort, structural clarity, and modern elegance for which Ponti’s circle was known.
