T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings

T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings (1905–1976) was a British-born designer who became one of the defining voices of American modernism. Often referred to simply as Robsjohn-Gibbings, his work combined classical inspiration with a distinctly modern outlook, bringing clean lines and sculptural balance to mid-century interiors. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he drew heavily on the aesthetics of ancient Greece, translating its harmony and simplicity into furniture for the modern home. Robsjohn-Gibbings furniture is characterized by geometric shapes, refined proportions, and an emphasis on function over ornament. His collaborations with the Widdicomb Furniture Company produced some of the most sought-after designs of the era, including the elegant Robsjohn-Gibbings chairs, which remain icons of mid-century design. Beyond furniture, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings worked as an interior designer for prominent clients such as Elizabeth Arden and Doris Duke, creating spaces that reflected sophistication and timeless appeal. His vision bridged history and modernity, ensuring that every Robsjohn-Gibbings chair or table carried both cultural depth and practical elegance. Today, collectors prize his creations as enduring symbols of refined modern living.
