Italian Murano Glass Sconces
In this New York City residence, designer Matthew Kowles transformed a tucked-away bar niche with bold artistry. The space is illuminated by a pair of 20th-century Italian Murano glass sconces.
Murano glass is world-renowned for its artistry and tradition, handcrafted on the Venetian island of Murano for over 700 years. Established in the late 1200s, Murano quickly became the center of Italian glassmaking after Venice relocated all furnaces there to protect both the city and the trade secrets of its master artisans. The result was a flourishing of innovation that defined European decorative arts.
Authentic Murano glass is celebrated for its unmatched techniques, cristallo glass (clear as rock crystal), aventurine glass infused with golden sparkles, the intricate millefiori floral patterns, delicate latticino filigree, and the layered color effects of sommerso glass. These methods, still used by Murano glassmakers today, transformed simple vessels into collectible art objects, luxury lighting, and dazzling Murano glass chandeliers.
Collectors, interior designers, and art lovers seek out Murano glass not only for its beauty but also for its cultural significance.
Each piece carries the history of Venetian opulence and centuries of Italian design excellence. From sculptural vases and decorative bowls to hand-blown glass lighting, authentic Murano glass continues to embody elegance, refinement, and enduring craftsmanship, making it one of the most desired forms of Italian decorative art worldwide.
